Event description

Description

This is the classroom option for a course that we can also run online (please contact us for details). Please note there is an additonal 'license' fee payable to the RYA at the time of your assessment for £60.

The course is focussed on using the radio and understanding its functions not technical electronics! We like to give everyone on the course plenty of hands on practice on the training radios so that you are ready to leave the course and use your live radio with no worries. In order to do this we limit the course to four places if you're coming on a scheduled course so there is plenty of time to practice and you'll have a radio to yourself. It is taught by either the Centre Principal or the Chief Instructor so you can guarantee we'll be interested in ensuring you get the most from the course and our style is friendly and relaxed whilst still professional. Any questions about the course or other training please do not hesitate to give us a call, always happy to chat.

NB. If you can gather together a group of friends/family we can run this course on a date and at a location to suit you (max course size is 12 but contact us to discuss the best options for your group)

Although the ticket option states no refunds- we are aware that sometimes events occur that we are not expecting so please be assured we will always do our best to work with you. Our terms and conditions are available on our website.

The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures.

Course topics include: The basics of radio operation, the correct frequencies (channels) to be used, distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures, making ship to shore communication, Digital Selective Calling (DSC), Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB) Search and Rescue (SART)

Prior to the course we will send out a book for you to complete pre-course reading. This will enable you to get the maximum from the course and you should expect to spend three hours on this work. Although indoors for the course you will spend a significant amount of time on our training radios practicing radio calls. Our instructors are keen to ensure you get the information relevant to your water activities whilst still covering the mandatory syllabus. We pride ourselves on conducting the assessment in a friendly and relaxed manner whilst still maintaining the standards required.

There is an assessment fee of £60 payable to the RYA on the day of assessment.
