Event description

Description

VICE & VERSES: NEO-SOUL BRIGADE is a celebration of storytelling and music like none other in Ireland. With a focus on spoken word artists who collaborate with musicians -- poets at their most experimental -- and beautiful, lyrically-focused music with a jazzy, hip-hop, neo-soul essence, prepare to have your mind and soul dipped in molasses.

The night is inspired by the Nuyorican Poets Café in New York City, a legendary Lower East Side venue where many African-African and Puerto Rican spoken word artists elevated the artform to new heights, and where the likes of Saul Williams and Aja Monet launched their careers. Celebrate black American forms of expression met with cultures around the world.

Featuring Clara Rose Thornton and Vice & Verses, with two international feature acts, and a poetry/comedy open mic with Vice & Verses improvising behind each act. Top-drawer raffles, giveaways, unique multicultural craic. Your host is two-time Leinster Poetry Slam Champion Clara Rose Thornton: Chicago-born, New-York-simmered, Dublin-dwelling.

➫ YOUR HEADLINER: LADY GREW

Lady Grew is the catsuit-wearing stage detonator you know from RTÉ 2's groundbreaking series "Connected", where she destigmatized sex work activism and perceptions of female vulnerability. Lady Grew, aka Kate McGrew, moved from New York City to Cork in 2008, where she quickly gained notoriety as a pole-dancing electro/hip-hop MC: creating tunes, releasing EPs, appearing on vinyl with Dublin labels Ghetto Quietly and !kaboogie, and making politically tinged music videos. Her two award-winning comedy musicals -- "Sweet Pang!" and "Hooker P.I." -- combine her skills of acting, singing, clowning, spoken word, and pole-dance. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Wesleyan University in the USA, and is the coordinator of Sex Workers Alliance Ireland. Lady Grew's work is radically feminist, universally stimulating, and totally engulfing. @ladygrew
