A one day intensive practical course covering the essential tools to confidently create video footage for creative work.

About this Event

A one day intensive course that will provide participants with what they need to know to start making their own video footage. The course covers visual storytelling, video production including camera set-up, how to capture footage and audio, and an opportunity to apply what you've learnt through practical exercises.

Course structure:

– Visual storytelling (equipping participants with skills and knowledge needed to carry out effective pre-production, including mood boarding and narrative techniques, and important tools for producing and an engaging story.

– Camera basics (covering all the basics you need to know to ensure you get the footage you need when shooting with a DSLR, and minimise the work to be done in post-processing. Styles covered will include capturing pieces to camera, b-roll footage, and ‘running and gunning’).

Topics include:

Camera setup essentials (such as frame rate and colour format);

Setting shutter speed, and impact of changing it;

Capturing footage -shooting handheld, shoulder-mount, shoulder-mount, gimbal, slider, tripod, et;

Focusing;

Capturing audio effectively;

Lighting considerations;

You will be set an exercise in order to use all you've learnt and refine your skills in a practical exercise.

The footage will be reviewed and feedback given on how and where improvements can be made.

Cinzia D’Ambrosi is an award winning photojournalist covering human rights stories and the founder of the Photojournalism Hub. What should I bring to the course?

Participants are invited to bring their own DSLR camera, lenses, and audio equipment along with a notepad and pen.
