Event description

Description

We're at Meltdown on a TUESDAY night? That's right, you heard us. Tuesday.

Once more: for one time only, this is VideoBrains, but on a Tuesday.

VideoBrains is partnered with Five out of Ten and Nine Worlds VG. If you have any questions, can’t afford a ticket but would still like to come, or would like to pitch a 15-minute talk for a future event, please email jake@videobrains.co.uk.
Twitter hashtag = #VideoBrains
The best way to support us is to buy a ticket and come along. If you want to help out even more, please donate to our Patreon.

We're also going to be giving away some prizes, including Lego Dimensions. Details will follow on that shortly.

Tickets on the door will be £10 if available.

SPEAKER LINEUP

Kate Gray - Beginnings
New year, new...game? Time to have a look at video game beginnings. With Kate! YAY

William Pugh - Emergent and Immersive Theatre on The Stage of Counter Strike: Global Offensive
A talk about how I change my steam name and go onto random matchmaking in games, then pretend to be a character over the course of the match.

Mary Hamilton - FUCK COMPLETE: a rant about beating games
Fuck 80 hours of gameplay. Fuck new game plus. Fuck achievements. Fuck beating a game. Embrace enjoying it. Embrace bundles. Embrace not knowing which games you already own. Embrace reviewing a game when you've played it for three hours. Embrace the partiality of human experience.

You are worth more than your gamerscore.

Grant Howitt - Bonnie MacFarlane Is The Only Decent Female Character Rockstar Have Ever Written
Seriously; the biggest of noises, the triplest of triple-As, the highest and mightiest Rockstar can spend eight years programming a living, breathing world but can't use any of that time to write a female character worth a damn. Why's that? Also featuring: why Bonnie MacFarlane is excellent, a brief run-down of all the terrible female characters in GTA up until now, and where's my goddamn Red Dead Redemption 2: MacFarlane's Revenge?

Darren Daley - TBA
Covering the very basics of making a melee combat game. From prototyping methods to movements systems as well as how collision systems typically work in them.

David King - 10 Questions Everyone Exhibiting Games Should Consider. *Number 7 will surprise you.
Many spaces are showing and exhibiting games, which is fantastic, but we can always do more to make the experience better for everyone. I think now is a good time to expand that conversation.

Boring stuff:

We can't refund your ticket if you don't attend on the night. But if we have to cancel the event for some reason, we will refund you.
Please be here for the first talk at 7pm - This is so important I could say it twice.
Please be here for the first talk at 7pm - I said it twice. There's always a full programme and we can’t start if no-one is there. We hate having to cut talks short. You can show up any time from 6pm and get a chance to meet other video games fans and talk to the speakers.

The VideoBrains talks are recorded and published on our website, social media channels and in other publications and promotional materials. By purchasing a ticket for this event, you consent to being filmed and/or photographed and for VideoBrains to publish any associated media. If you’d like to attend but don’t want to be recorded, please email jake@videobrains.co.uk.
