Overview

This talk will introduce you to the archival material held by the Vindolanda Trust and discuss some of the work done so far.

Vindolanda is one of the most recognisable sites in the Hadrian’s Wall landscape. With ongoing excavations and extensive archaeological remains, it is also well-known for its incredible artefacts, including the Vindolanda Writing Tablets and the largest collection of Roman footwear in Western Europe. However, the site is also home to a number of different archives, including those relating to Vindolanda itself, as well as collections of other influential individuals from the study of Hadrian’s Wall, such as Eric Birley and Charlie Anderson.

Work began on these collections at the end of 2024, with the aim of making them accessible to the public. This talk will give an introduction to their archival material and discuss some of the work they have done so far. This talk will be given by Bethany Goodman, Assistant Archivist at the Vindolanda Trust.
