Virgin StartUp Meetup: How to tell (sell) your story

“The greatest tool of communication given to us by Mother Nature is the power of storytelling. And telling is selling!”

So what does storytelling have to do with your business? Everything. If you can’t convey a story then your products or services are not going to appeal to your audience. Our brains value stories over anything else.

Having a great business idea alone is no longer enough. People now want to know the story behind the business, what it stands for, why they should care and why they should buy it. It’s why so many of the most successful new businesses are putting story telling front and centre of what they do.

Speakers

Jonathan Davies - Founder of The Training Room

Jonathan has made the classic entrepreneurial ’journey’. At 29, he saw a gap in the market and confidently backed his business ambition with his own cash and lots of hard work. He created The Training Room, a leading UK career providing company with a growing £11 million turnover and has since received a £20m investment in 2013 by private equity house LDC to accelerate company growth. Davies’ entrepreneurial masterstroke was the provision of ’industry-ready’ professionals to new and emerging markets – initially, personal trainers for gyms and leisure complexes. The company now also trains beauty therapists and has also launched career courses for the catering and hospitality sector. Davies began the company with his partner in 2006 from the archetypal ’spare room in their home.’ In 2006, they had two full-time employees,in their first year they trained 200 people, now they train 10,000+ per year. Now, this careers provider has 28 city-based UK academies and an expanding full-time staff base exceeding 150.

Mark Cribb - Urban Guild

Urban Guild is the brand Mark Cribb uses to unite all of his businesses. Urban Beach, Urban Reef, Urban Farm, Jenkins and Sons and The Wood Oven.  Mark set up the independent chain after being inspired by his travels down under – wishing to re-create a relaxed, surfers paradise back in the UK.

Since opening Urban Beach, a hotel, bar and bistro, in 2006, owner Mark Cribb has collected many awards and represented the area on a Channel 4 TV programme, too. It says a lot for the business that it has won awards as a hotel AND as a bar and is seems to successfully walk the tightrope between being ‘cool’ while also being friendly and relaxing. Since then Mark Cribb, has launched the Urban Guild which unites his restaurant, boutique hotel, cafe, bar, craft beer and a farm in the new forest, together under one heading.
