How to build (and keep) a team

Any successful business lives or dies by the people it employs and the team it builds.

We spend so much of our professional life at work it’s crucial that, as early-stage business owners, we not only find ways to create a productive and inspiring environment but also nurture and develop our teams so they blossom and remain loyal.

But finding and hiring the right talent and keeping them is a very real challenge that can profoundly affect your businesses chance of success.

So, if you are a solopreneur looking to make your first hire or a larger business trying to scale your team for growth, this is defiantly the talk for you. We have three fascinating perspectives from three amazing people on how to build and keep a team.

Pip Murray - Founder: Pip & Nut

Pip Murray is the Founder of the award winning nut butter and nut milk brand, Pip & Nut. Pip came up with the concept for the brand in 2013 while eating lots of peanut butter to support her marathon training.

She noticed that most of the products on the supermarket shelves were packed full of palm oil and added sugars and realised that there was a gap in the traditional spreads category for a natural nut butter brand that also appealed to a younger demographic.

Following a successful crowd-funding campaign, Pip & Nut launched on to the shelves of Selfridges in January 2015. Since then, the brand has gone from strength to strength, turning over more than £3m in its first full year of trading and is on track to double this in 2017 as well as picking up a flurry of awards and being stocked in 5,000 stores in the UK.

Pip has built and nurtured a formidable scurry of squirrels (her team!) and will be sharing the importance of putting the right people around you and helping them develop and blossom!

Ian Hood - Head of Digital: Fidelity

Ian Hood is Head of Digital for Fidelity International’s UK division as well as Germany, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Ian’s role is to set the digital strategy and direction of the business areas he supports and deliver through his own internal team of digital specialists.

He has built and developed many successful teams and prides himself on finding great people, creating a great team dynamic, letting them play and stretch themselves and regularly monitoring how they are feeling and actively listening to them.

Ian will be taking us through the key ways you can build and keep your team.

Holly Fisher - Head of talent and innovation: Bozboz

Holly is Head of Talent and Innovation at Bozboz, a multi-award winning full-service creative agency based in central Brighton. Holly has been hands-on in building and developing the brilliant team at Bozboz.

Throughout her career, she's built teams from 3 to 120 people and everything in between. Holly will be talking about how to attract a brilliant team with your employer brand, how to motivate and get the best out of your people and the highs and lows she's experienced along the way.

Holly's a specialist in enhancing innovation and creativity in a digital/tech context, with a background in talent management; she is a Diageo alumni and worked in the aerospace and more recently digital (including SaaS) industries. As well as agency and in-¬house experience, Holly's also worked as an independent people ops consultant with a range of businesses, mainly in the digital industry.

When Holly's not heading up talent and innovation at Bozboz, she likes to cook, a lot.
