Discover the history of the Great Exhibition in 1851 and how land in South Kensington was developed into the cultural centre, Albertopolis

Discover the fascinating history of the development of the South Kensington area. Known previously for its health benefits and few big houses . The area was acquired by the Commissioners of the Great Exhibition in 1851. Starting outside the Victoria and Albert Museum, we will vitually walk through ‘Albertopolis’ viewing the site of the Great Exhibition, the Albert Memorial and Monument to the Great Exhibition, Albert Hall, and learn about the origins of the major museums and institutions of South Kensington.

This is a live virtual tour hosted via Zoom video conferencing where your guide will give an illustrated presentation of the tour route with an accompanying talk. There will be opportunities for questions and interaction both during and after the virtual tour.
