Join me for an hour of online sculptural appreciation.
London's parks, squares and gardens boast many marvellous memorials and statues, and many buildings that line the streets are enhanced with delightfully decorative carved panels. But, if you take a closer look to study the workmanship and find the artist's mark which is usually hidden somewhere near the base, you usually find that the creator is/was a man. Yet stone and wood carving, indeed any form of sculture, is not specifically a 'men-only' branch of the arts.
Nineteenth century art schools were well-attended by women yet, despite many of these ladies being very skilled with a hammer and chisel, it was generally seen as merely giving them an artistic training, certainly not seen as a career. Many of them would have given up their evening classes when the first baby was imminent. However, as the decades passed and we moved in to the twentieth century, women sculptors finally came to the fore, and today we can see forms made by females across the metropolis from Westminster to the City of London and beyond.
During this 1hr talk I'll show you a range of works that adorn the streets, some by some well-known names and others by sculptors you may not have been aware of before. There's sure to be a couple of pieces that might cause you to say, 'ooh I had no idea about that'!
After the tour the meeting room will stay open for questions and discussion.
- Please note, this is not a video experience – it is a presentation – I talk about the subject whilst showing you slides containing images and maps.
- Details for how to access this event will be on your booking confirmation which will be sent via email after you have purchased your ticket.
* Also available: 'Memorials to Marvellous Women' which showcases a cross-section of London statues that remember women who have shaped our lives. A guided walking tour in central London is planned for Summer 2022 following a trail of both female-created and female-commemorated artworks.

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends. The walks and talks I offer are all on subjects that intrigue me – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am particularly interested in the architecture on our ever-changing streets and the little details on and above them.
