Vincent Van Gogh lived at 87 Hackford Road in Stockwell for a year between August 1873 and 1874. He fell in love with British culture and was inspired by the art he saw in the UK. He was working at Goupil and Company, an Art Dealers in Covent Garden, and he walked to and from work.
This virtual tour follows Vincent's footsteps in a 3½ mile "walk" between his workplace and his lodgings, exploring what London would have been like in the early 1870s. We go by the river Thames along what was then the newly built Victoria Embankment and cross Westminster Bridge which Van Gogh sketched on some Goupil and Co headed note paper. And we hear how different life was then before indoor plumbing, domestic cookers, electricity and the motor vehicle.

Reviews (November 2020)
I really enjoyed your virtual tour “In Vincent’s Footsteps: From Covent Garden to Stockwell.” It was fascinating being transported back to the 1870s and the photos and images, as well as your facts and stories, really brought Vincent’s London to life. I hope one day to walk the route in real life. - Debbie
I really enjoyed the virtual walk yesterday In Vincent’s Footsteps and also the chat after. Your knowledge made for a great experience. You whetted my appetite for more knowledge and have ordered the book Van Gogh in Britain - Patricia
