This is a recording of a talk called 'Virtual Tour of Saltaire, Victorian Model Town', by Neil Jackson which was recorded in 2021.
Saltaire was a model town, designed by Messrs. Lockwood and Mawson to accommodate the workers at Sir Titus Salt’s two vast alpaca wool mills. Built between 1853 and 1876, it comprised not only some 850 houses, but an Institute, a school, a Congregational church and Sunday school, a Weslyan Methodist chapel, alms houses and public baths. It did not, however, contain a pub. This virtual tour will explore the development of the town over 23 years as well as some of the public buildings which served the community.
The virtual tour will be led by Professor Neil Jackson, author of the book Saltaire: The Making of a Model Town (Spire Books, 2010). He is an architect and architectural historian and Professor Emeritus in the School of Architecture at Liverpool University. He has published many books on architecture including Victorian architecture (Nineteenth-century Bath, Architects and Architecture, 1991, 1998; Saltaire: The Making of a Model Town, 2010) and Arts and Crafts architecture (F W Troup, Architect, 1985). He is a Trustee of the Victorian Society and has recently retired as the Chair of the Events Committee.
After booking a ticket, you will be given access to the recording of the event. Please ignore the event date in the listings.
