Event description

Description

Starting at the Mitchell Library and ending at Glasgow Green to mark the eightieth anniversary of the outbreak of war in September 1939, come along and experience a virtual tour of Glasgow in wartime (1939 - 1945). PhD history student Kevin Morrison from GCU Glasgow School for Business and Society will guide you through the wartime streets, squares and parks of Glasgow City Centre.

Kevin will share with you what exciting information he has uncovered about Glasgow’s buildings, open spaces, networks and the people who experienced Glasgow’s darkest hour. Far from dark, behind the black-out curtains and blinds Glaswegians organised air raid precautions from nerve centres, danced the jitterbug under bright lights, organised billets for tired servicemen and women and Allied troops, and reported blackout infringements.

Based on material from Glasgow’s archival centres, this guided tour will provide accounts of the wartime civilians who lived and engaged with the cityscape in wartime. The virtual tour will be followed by a special screening of B.H. Humble’s hour long 1942 silent film of Glasgow’s Civil Defence organisation from the National Library of Scotland's Moving Image Archive. Shot in many parts of Glasgow, you may recognise where you live transformed by the culture of war.

Timings for the event:

5pm - 5.30pm - registration and chance to view GCU's display of home front material from some of the collections held in the archive centre including 'Dig for Victory' and 'Make do and Mend'.
