Event description
A virtual tour of Pimlico the “garden village” in aid of charity.

About this Event

With its beautiful squares, gardens and stunning architecture, Pimlico has often been described as a “garden village”. Join City of Westminster qualified guide Barbara Wright as she takes us on a tour of this fascinating part of London.

An insightful tour of the Pimlico neighbourhood to explore how it has been shaped by some of the important and influential planning, housing and design ideas of the 18th to the 21st century.

You will be taken through the famous early 19th century master builder Mr Cubitt’s district where you will get under the skin of this neighbourhood, where Londoner’s really live, away from the hustle and bustle, and yet only a stone’s throw from the country’s political centre.

Apart from Thomas Cubitt’s squares and terraces you will be introduced to some architecturally iconic schemes of the 20th century together with some key individuals and issues in the public housing movement in the UK over time, right to the present day.

The brilliant and often forgotten post war writer and Observer architecture critic Iain Nairn lived in Pimlico and we will hear how he led a campaign about the importance of buildings in shaping society in positive ways.

Pimlico has stunning stucco houses and garden squares, quaint churches and is an undiscovered part of London to explore in detail with us on this fascinating talk.

There is no charge for admission to this event. Instead, Barbara is inviting participants to make a donation to a charity that is close to her heart which is Crisis the UK national charity for the homeless.
