This virtual workshop is hosted in collaboration with renowned product development specialists, Bang Creations, and experienced patent and trademark attorneys, London IP and is supported by The British Library Business and IP Centre.

This workshop is hosted via Zoom over 2 consecutive days. Day 1 will be presented by Stefan Knox of Bang Creations and will focus on designing a product to take to market. Day 2 will be presented by David Warrilow of London IP and will explain the process of protecting your product idea and avoiding infringement. There will be a 10-15 minute break in between each (45 minute to hour-long) session.

Tuesday 15th February

Part 1: Design for Commercial Success: 10:00 - 11:00

This session is hosted by Stefan from Bang Creations and highlights the different aspects of designing a product for commercial success. Giving case study examples from his career, Stefan will demonstrate how to ensure a product's unique selling points are clearly identified and designed for the appropriate target market. Finally, Stefan will give insight into designing to meet target costs and accommodating everyone in the supply chain. 

Part 2: The Product Design Process, From Idea to Production: 11:00 - 12:00

In this session, Stefan explains each product development stage and how the process can vary depending on the scale of a project. By breaking down each stage of product development, this session will give you a clear idea of what to expect at the end of each stage and how to progress efficiently through development.

Wednesday 16th February

Part 3: How to Protect Your Product: 10:00 - 11:00

In this session, David provides an introduction to intellectual property, explaining how different IP rights arise, what they protect and how they are infringed. Practical steps to try to determine the protectability and infringement issues of any product/service are provided in terms of both patents and design registrations.

Part 4: IP and Product Development: 11:00 - 12:00

In this session, David runs through an explanation of why, where and when to seek patent and registered design protection, including a basic explanation of the processes involved and some useful strategies that can be used within the systems. There is a brief discussion of trademarks, and the session concludes with a note of caution over IP ownership.

  • The differences between invention, design and innovation

  • Idea creation

  • Product design, development, costing, prototyping and margin

  • Manufacture or license?

  • Can you protect your idea with a patent or registered design?

  • Trademarks

  • IP ownership issues
