Vision Schools Scotland Shared Practice event takes place on 11th May 2022, on Windows Teams.

This event is for teachers who are a Vision School at Level 1 and are working towards their Level 2 Award. The event aims to support teachers with their Vision Schools Scotland application as well as providing teachers who use the Holocaust resource that is based on Marianne Grant's testimony, a new perspective. There will be presentations from Level 2 Vision Schools, with opportunities to ask questions.

Teachers from schools that are not applying for Level 2 may also register for this event.

Guest speaker is Dr Jo Meacock, Curator of British Art at Glasgow Museums (shown left in the photo alongside fellow author Peter Tuka and Marianne Grant’s daughter Geraldine Shenkin), who will be talking about the contribution of Marianne Grant’s artwork to understanding the Holocaust.

Dr Meacock is co-author of Painting for My Life: The Holocaust Artworks of Marianne Grant (2021).

Glasgow Museums holds a unique collection of Holocaust artworks by Czech Jewish artist Marianne Grant (1921–2007) who witnessed first hand Nazi atrocity in World War II, first in Theresienstadt concentration camp ghetto and then in Auschwitz, Neuengamme and Bergen-Belsen. Subsequently she was a refugee in Sweden before settling in Glasgow in 1951. Whereas some artist prisoners found their artwork brought them unwanted attention, punishment and even death, Marianne asserted that it saved her life. Her art gave her courage and resilience, providing a vital link with her previous life and giving hope for the future, fostering a sense of community and support among prisoners, and giving dignity to those stripped of their individual identity and humanity. Through her art she was able to communicate the unspeakable. Jo Meacock will talk about the significance of Marianne’s art and new research made possible by access to personal documents in the family’s collection which has resulted in the publication of a new book to coincide with the centenary of the artist’s birth.
