Can a person who is not a Muslim visit a Mosque

Yes. The Mosque is the House of God and is open to all

Are children allowed to visit a Mosque?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely. We do ask that all children are accompanied by an adult.

Question 3

Can a visit take place at any time of the week?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Mosque is open 7 days a week. It is advisable to inform the Mosque of your visit as they will then be able to share further details as to when the daily 5 congregational prayers are taking place and other activities that may be of interest to you and will also tell you of the exact opening.

Question 4

Would I need to wear anything special to be in a Mosque?

Accepted Answer

Nothing special. Your preferred clothes should suffice. Like all places of worship, you would be expected however to dress modestly which cover all your body (such as long sleeve shirts, long skirts and trousers).

Question 5

As a lady, do you expect me to wear a scarf during the visit?

Accepted Answer

No. You do not need to wear a scarf or have a head garment. Many choose to do so though, but it is not mandatory for you to make the visit to the Mosque.

Question 6

Would I need to take my shoes off at any stage of my visit?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Shoes should be removed on arrival or as you enter the prayer hall (the Mosque will advise on this when you are arranging your visit). Removal of shoes is required to ensure cleanliness is maintained as a number of prayer actions require hand and face being placed on the floor.

Would I be allowed to eat or drink in the Mosque?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely. You are welcome to eat or drink. In some Mosques there be designated areas for this (these will be signposted or you will be informed on arrival), but either way cleanliness must be kept at all times so any litter needs to be disposed mindfully.

Question 8

What do I say when I meet Muslims in the Mosque?

Accepted Answer

You can greet Muslims as you would normally would (Hi, Hello, etc.). You are also welcomed to say Asslaamo-Alaykum (peace be unto you) as this more preferred when Muslims meet. If someone greets you with Asslaamo-Alaykum then you can reply by saying Wa-Alaykum Salaam (peace be unto you as well).

Can I shake hands with the people in the Mosque?

Yes, gender to gender handshaking is preferred and welcomed. Best to avoid cross gender (male to female, female to male) handshaking. If unsure then best to wait to see how the other person greets… could be with a head nod or hand on chest to show respect together with the words Asslaamo-Alaykum

Yes, by all means. You are welcome to talk and have conversations whilst in the Mosque, whilst keeping in mind that it is a place of worship and that there may be people praying so keeping the noise down is norm and expected

Could I take photographs during the Mosque visit?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you are welcome to take photos of the Mosque and its contents. Photographs of people in the Mosque can be taken if consent have been given by the individuals in the photo, as normally required in all such cases.
