We are Team ESTEEM from Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, a student team participating in the Solar Decathlon Middle East, the world’s largest design and construction competition. Our aim is to build an innovative house of the future powered exclusively with solar energy.

We are the only UK entry to the competition, with an additional 14 international universities also taking part. Our innovative house is constructed with Scottish timber (a UK first) sourced from locally grown trees. The competition will run in conjunction with Expo2021 in Dubai, an event with an estimated 15-25 million visitors, featuring cutting-edge technologies and designs from across the globe.

Our home is made from Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panels, made at Construction Scotland Innovation Centre, Glasgow using Scottish timber! We hope to make the business case for the use of CLT in construction throughout the UK, helping to promote local industry and reduce carbon emissions from timber transportation.
