About this Event

Book a viewing appointment to see Photo Fringe 2020: Collectives Hub in the Main Gallery at Phoenix Art Space from 3 - 31 October. Tickets also grant you entry to Denise Felkin: Mum's Not the Word in the Window Gallery.

MAIN GALLERY

The Photo Fringe: Collectives Hub at Phoenix Art Space features photography and lens-based works by a selection of photographic collectives working in and beyond our region. A regular feature of the festival since 2014, the Collectives Hub is now well-known as a unique platform to celebrate collective creativity and share practice that pushes the boundaries of artists working together.

Photo Fringe 2020 is a call to action, inviting artists and audiences to take photos and to make a difference. To make art and communicate our place in the world through it. To use photography to make change. To develop new ways of seeing together. At this critical moment of historical change the festival asks: “How can photography help us to see the world afresh and help us to envision a fairer, safer, greener world? How can it help us to understand global change? How can your photography make a difference?”

Chemical-free prints made with foraged plants from Bristol Alternative Photographic Printmakers; lock-down frustrations from Home and Away Collective; RAKE Collective explores far-right radicalisation in internet chat rooms. London Alternative Photography Collective has created landscapes seeped in local folklore; Pachamama draws focus on the relationship between gender and the environment. 2020 Collective of recent LCC graduates probes photography as an emotive language. Landing Collective offers English landscape perspectives exploring how human life and the natural world are intertwined. YumYum Collective encourages a fun way of viewing photography through installation, confusing the lines between a photograph and the space in which the viewer stands. UnderExposed explores the effect of collectivity on art practices.

WINDOW GALLERY

Mum's Not the Word is a collection of photographic images depicting women who do not have children and their reflections on what this means to them as individuals. Raising questions of identity, social constructs, the concept of what it is to be a woman and how stereotyped behaviour is influenced by various factors, both external and internal, such as the expectation around having children and the impact this has in an era of environmental crisis.
