VISIT TO SANDHAM MEMORIAL CHAPEL ON TUESDAY 4TH JULY START 11.00:

We have a private group visit arranged to view the visionary paintings by Stanley Spencer, which cover the interior of this redbrick chapel. It is an immersive emotional experience, and we will have the chapel to ourselves. The work was commissioned as a memorial for the forgotten dead from World War 1, and for Harry Sandham. The National Trust curator will begin the talk at 11.00 We are allowed to sketch, but not use an eraser to avoid detritus on the floor. The chapel is best visited in the summer months when the light is strongest. There is a memorial garden to enjoy and perhaps picnic in, and (of course) a gift shop and loos. The chapel is now run by the National Trust so there is an entrance fee of £8.00 for non-members payable on the door.

Coffee would be available at The Carpenter's Arms (almost opposite) also on Harts Lane, 01623 278251, if you phone and book in advance from 10.15. You could book lunch there as well, if you don't fancy a picnic. There is a marked walk from the chapel taking in pertinent points from Stanley Spencer's life - leaflets in the shop - for a stroll around the village in the afternoon. The journey is 51 miles from Ringwood, almost all on dual carriageway, A31 then A34, turning off at Burghclere/Highclere to join White Hill at 49 miles, and follow signs to Sandham Chapel up Harts Lane. The AA says it takes 54 minutes from Ringwood. Sandham Memorial Chapel is on Harts Lane, Burghclere, RG20 9JT, phone number 01635 278394.

Judy suggests that we car share: 01425 477215. Please let her know if you would be happy to drive and take members with you, or if you would like a lift, and she will keep a list. The best place to meet will be in front of her house 28 Salisbury Road, Ringwood, BH24 1AS (going north on the A338, turn right at the yellow bollards and double back on to the old road) park on verge. Leaving time will depend on whether coffee is required! 9.15 or 9.45 Those with a full car will drive straight by.

For information The Stanley Spencer Gallery has a focus on his lover Daphne Charlton, and includes scrapbook drawings and finished pieces.

The exhibition finishes 1st October.

DON'T MISS THIS AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO VIEW THESE PAINTINGS CLOSE UP, PRIVATELY AND PEACEFULLY.
