Event description

Description

The Charterhouse in Smithfield has served many purposes since its first use as a burial site for plague victims from 1349. A Carthusian monastery was established here in 1371 and Charterhouse became an important centre of ecclesiastical learning, frequented by Thomas More. After the Reformation, the monks were ousted and a Tudor mansion built, visited by both Elizabeth I and James I. The almshouse and school were founded in 1611 and today 40 Brothers are accommodated here. One of them will guide visitors through the courts, Great Hall, library and chapel, after which tea will be served.

Includes tea and biscuits
