A visit to Colchester, the oldest recorded town in England.

Colchester is well known for its Oyster Fair. The event includes a lunch of fresh oysters or a vegetarian dish and afterwards a talk about Multi-competence by Professor Vivian Cook.

All guests are offered a guided tour of the University campus, including a visit to the Department of Language and Linguistics with information about a number of degree schemes in Linguistics and Modern Languages.

Programme

12.00pm – Welcome
12.15pm – Talk: The importance of oysters in Colchester
12.45pm – Oyster lunch (cash bar nearby for drinks)
2.00pm – Talk: "Multicompetence", with Professor Vivian Cook (biography)
4.00pm – Tour around the University campus, including a visit to the Department of Language and Linguistics with information about a number of degree schemes in Linguistics and Modern Languages

What is multi-competence?

In the early 1990s Prof. Cook proposed the multi-competence approach to second language acquisition. Multi-competence is "the knowledge of two languages in one mind" and it holds that those who know more than one language have different minds from those with only one language, because knowing two languages changes the way people use their first language and even the way they think.
