Description

Our visit to County Dublin begins at Lucan House and Demesne, Lucan, County Dublin. Lucan House, described as a pure Palladian villa, was built in 1772 by Agmondisham Vesey. Vesey, although not an architect, designed the house in conjunction with William Chambers, who also designed the Casino at Marino. All the rooms of the house are as they were when the house was completed in 1780, with the exception of a new floor in the library and bathrooms, which the embassy added in the 1950’s.

The current custodian of this magnificent property is his Excellency Giovanni Adorni Braccesi, who is in his third year of tenure as Italian Ambassador to Ireland. The ambassador has very kindly provided members of the UAHS this privileged opportunity to visit his home in Ireland.

Following a tour of Lucan House the visit will continue at Castletown House and Gardens, Celbridge, County Kildare. Castletown is Ireland’s largest and earliest Palladian style house. Built between 1722 and 1729 for William Conolly, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons and wealthiest commoner in Ireland. The façade was almost certainly designed by the Italian architect, Alessandron Galilei, while the Irish architect Sir Edward Lovett Pearce added the wings.

The house remained in the ownership of the Speakers descendants until 1965 when the house was purchased by a property developer. Fortunately the future of the house and demesne was saved in 1967 when purchased by the Hon Desmond Guinness, founder of the Irish Georgian Society. In 1979 care of the house passed to the Castletown Foundation, a charitable trust which was established to own, maintain and to continue the restoration of the house.

On arrival at Castletown there will be opportunity to have lunch availing of either the courtyard café or if you prefer bring a picnic to enjoy in the surroundings of the beautiful gardens. After lunch we will enjoy a guided tour of this splendid house.

Attendees are asked to arrive at Lucan House for 11am. The visit will conclude at Castletown House at approx. 4pm.

Transport to be arranged individually. Please bring picnic if desired.

Numbers are limited to 40 people, UAHS members only, cost per person £20.
