Darlington Historical Sociery invite you to come to the beautiful, ancient, Grade 1 listed church of St Cuthbert in Darlington: a stunning 12th-century place of worship steeped in tradition, architectural beauty and rich history dating back to when the Saxon township and church were first established.
In January 2026, St Cuthbert’s will be closing for a year as work will start on the Opening Doors project that will make the church more accessible and welcoming to everyone. This will therefore be one of the last opportunities to experience the church with its current Victorian interior.
Paul Gilmore has written an excellent presentation about the history of St Cuthbert’s Church and will explain why the changes are necessary, reassure us about what will not change, and provide a clear picture of an exciting future.
Following the presentation, Gallery tours via the Belfry tower will be available (eight people at a time – and only for those who are not afraid of heights).
There is no fixed charge for this event but donations would be appreciated, to support the Opening Doors project. Warm clothing should be worn, as the church may not be fully heated.
Tea and coffee will be provided, and wine will be available (for an additional donation), but is not advised prior to a gallery tour!
