Description

Following on from the UK's recent success in the Portland 'Soft Power Index', CVAN, Policy Connect and the All-Party Parliamentary Design & Innovation Group (APDIG) are embarking on a new inquiry to investigate in more detail on how government can best support the Visual Arts sector in an increasingly challenging and competitive global cultural sector. The inquiry will look into the challenges and opportunities associated with in improving the reach and influence of the visual arts on the UK international reputation and income from creative exports.

The workshop will be held at the River Terrace at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead on from 12pm until 4pm on Tuesday 18th June, 2019. This workshop primarily consider the future challenges and opportunities for the visual art sector, and how artists, policy makers and government can work to meet them.

Refreshments will be served.

The inquiry is particularly keen to consider:

Where is the government seen as being particularly strong or weak on promoting visual arts?

  • How can government improve the resources available to artists to develop international links and develop a global reputation?
  • What the education system can do to improve and promote visual art skills?
  • How can galleries and museums work more collaboratively to support artists?
  • Where are the key opportunities over the coming years and how should the UK be engaging with them?

The report will be launched in the Houses of Parliament in Autumn 2019 and will support and inform CVAN's ongoing advocacy work.

The All-Party Parliamentary Design and Innovation Group (APDIG) is a cross-party coalition of Parliamentarians and design sector organisations that works to develop new design policy ideas, critique existing government decision-making around design, communicate within Parliament the enormous potential value of design, and help the design community better engage with the policy process.
