Learn a new way of storytelling in this practical masterclass with graphic designer Valentina D'Efilippo.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a good infographic is worth a thousand pages. As intuitive to create as it is to consume, data visualisation is a new visual language that is becoming increasingly popular. And the good news is that anyone with knowledge of storytelling, graphic design or data handling can learn with ease.

This in-depth, introductory course with graphic designer Valentina D’Efilippo provides an overview of the data visualisation process, and an eye-opening initiation into its potential as a storytelling medium.

You’ll find out how to assemble and interpret datasets, and understand the basics of various popular visualisation techniques. You’ll learn not just how to interpret a brief, but how to frame your final project for your audience to ensure the best possible outcome.

This course is for you if...

  • You have to present information for a living: you’re a journalist or charity worker who wishes to learn more about telling stories with data.
  • You work with data and wish to learn more about turning data into something visually compelling.
  • You regularly brief designers and developers to create infographics.
  • You’re a designer wishing to learn more about information graphics and data visualisation.

This one-day introductory course mixes theoretical instruction with exercises in sketching and storyboarding to provide a thorough grounding in the fundamental principles of data visualisation and visual storytelling. Attendees will work independently and in group to answer given briefs with original infographics created using pen and paper only. Topics covered on the day include:

  • Introduction to the history and principles of data visualisation
  • The anatomy of an infographic
  • Understanding different charts
  • Framing data for the target audience
  • Maximising design for best impact, understanding and memorability
