Visual Storytelling with Zara Slattery
Overview
Discover the power of visual storytelling through the vibrant world of comic art. In this course, you’ll learn how to transform ideas into compelling narratives on the page. Your tutor will guide you through the essentials of sequential storytelling using materials and themes. By the end, you will have planned and created your own short, four-page comic. Come with a story, a poem, a spark of an idea or simply an open mind.
The sessions will cover the following:
- Visual storytelling using line, shape, tone and colour
- Space and time on the page
- The language of mark-making
- Pacing and the placement of words
- Planning and completion of a short story 4 page comic
This course is suitable for all levels. All materials and equipment are provided.

Zara Slattery is an illustrator and comic artist and author of the award-winning graphic memoir, Coma. She has a BA Visual Communication from Edinburgh College of Art and an MA in Communication Design from Manchester Metropolitan University. Working from her garden studio, Zara’s client list includes national magazines, publicly funded bodies, gaming and TV production companies. She has run adult art education courses and workshops locally, nationally and internationally for over ten years.
