Vivaldi Four Seasons - with the Jersey Chamber Orchestra
Event Information
About this event
See fireworks from the Jersey Chamber Orchestra in a concert of popular classics including a world premiere by film composer Christopher Gunning.
Vivaldi's Four Seasons need no introduction. The dramatic and fiery solo lines takes the listener through the seasons from Spring to Winter.
The concert opens celebrating Ralph Vaughan- Williams's anniversary with his beautiful Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus based on the ancient folk tune Dives and Lazarus. In 16th century England it was traditionally sung as a Christmas carol to the words ‘Come all ye faithful Christians.’
A treat for the listeners is two of Piazzola's Four Seasons quoting from the Vivaldi and adding the rhythms and sensuality of south american music. We are treated to a world premiere of a piece for violin and orchestra written by Christopher Gunning. The BAFTA award winning film composer is well known for his music to series as Poirot and La Vie En Rose. He has written this piece for tonight's performer Harriet Mackenzie. The half ends with the uplifting Capriol Suite by Warlock.
The story of Dives and Lazarus derives from the notion of karma – with Dives representing the rich and Lazarus the poor. Dives refuses to offer food to Lazarus and instead orders his men to whip him and his dogs to bite him. As both men die, angels carry Lazarus to heaven, and the serpents drag Dives into hell. As the men cross paths once more, Dives asks Lazarus for a drop of water (which he is unable to give him), and he complains about his external punishment.
The soloists tonight are renowned internationally - Alexander SItkovetsky and Harriet Mackenzie perform all across the world with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra is conducted by the Chief Conductor Eamonn Dougan.
The harpsichord was made by Dr Rodney Challinor who has kindly lent it to Music in Action for the performance tonight. The concert is kindly supported by one of Music in Action's patrons.
