About this event

Vlerick Alumni & The Progress Coins Club: Fairness in Leadership, by Prof. David Patient

Check the full programme of the Progress Coins Club Activities for 2021-2022 here!

Perceptions of fairness are a powerful predictor of workplace attitudes and behaviors, especially in response to negative events. Unfortunately, fairness evaluations are subjective: each person decides for him/herself.

The good news is that there are certain steps we can take to demonstrate fairness in outcomes, procedures, and communication. As shown in more than 1500 academic studies, these steps are often inexpensive and powerful and include giving voice, showing respect, and providing clear reasons for decisions and procedures. This seminar will show how and why using principles of fairness is key to keeping your people motivated and engaged, especially in tough and uncertain times.

David Patient is a Professor of Leadership in the People & Organisations area at Vlerick Business School (Belgium). He holds a law degree from University College London (UK) and an MBA and a Ph.D. in Organisational Behaviour from the University of British Columbia (Canada). Prior to joining Vlerick, David was Associate Professor at Católica-Lisbon School of Business and Economics (Portugal), where his roles included Associate Dean of Research and Director of The Lisbon MBA and Management MSc programs. His research on organisational justice, managerial communication, effective teams, and age diversity is published in top journals. From 2016 to 2019, David served an elected term as Representative-at-Large on the Board of Governors of the 20,000-member Academy of Management, the leading international organisation of management scholars.

The Progress Coins Club aims to ignite and kindle a vibrant group of fellow Vlerick Alumni into a community that is interested in Personal, Professional & Team Development in order to survive, prosper and find happiness in a rapidly changing world.
