Description

About VoiceBox - 'VoiceBox: Music technology and the voice’ - How do you make a musical instrument speak? How can you use Auto-Tune to make President Obama & Boris Johnson sing? In a special performance full of singing and scientific demonstrations, multi-costumed tenor Greg Tassell joins scientist Wendy Sadler to show how musicians are mixing technology with the richness of the voice to create new sounds. Expect to hear opera on helium, relaxing folk songs and audience participation.

Age Suitability - KS2 upwards

Q&A - we are encouraging students to ask questions about Greg Tassell (singer) & Wendy Sadler's (scientist) careers in science and music. Examples of science based questions - Can technology replace people in future for music? How does voice recognition and synthesis work (like in Alexa and Siri) Singing - Are you born a good singer or can anyone learn? Why do you bother warming up the voice? Then from younger students, for example - what is the loudest sound ever heard? can you make your ears bleed? Are there sounds we can't hear with our ears? What animal has the best hearing? Why does everyone have a unique voice? What is the loudest/lowest, highest, musical instrument? Is music art or science?

TIMINGS - The performance will last for 50 mins and there is a 30 min Q&A after the performance. The performance starts promptly at 1pm. Schools will need to arrive by 12.30pm to be seated by 12.50pm at the latest. The performance is 70 minutes in length.

COST - Attendance is FREE to young people at local Kent schools, and to accompanying staff and their parents. We very much encourage parents/carers to attend this concert for free, too, but they will have to be seated with the school and arrive with the school.

BOOKING - You will be asked to fill in a short booking form, which indicates exactly how many young people, staff and parents/carers will be attending. We will need this in advance of the performance, and cannot guarantee space if you turn up unexpectedly on the day. We are limiting each school to bring only one class, in order that other schools can benefit from the performance.

GETTING THERE - We advise that you attend the performance from your school via walking bus as there is limited parking locally.

NOTE ABOUT THE AUDIENCE - The performance is also open to the general public, so please be aware of this in advance. We need to ensure that all children are accompanied by your school staff at all times (to toilets, and so on) and that they need to be on their very best behaviour throughout (of which we have no doubt that they will be, of course!). Please ensure that children bring a bottle of water or squash (and small snack if needed) with them to the concert.

Public Admission at the door subject to availability – Family Ticket (1 Adult, 1 Child) £5.00
