Voices of the Maya Talk - A journey of discovery and survival of indigenous Maya culture.
About this event
What the talk is about?
Charlotte will be delivering an illuminating account of the wonders of the Ancient Maya and the Voices of the Maya Expedition, whilst answering the question ‘Just how do you preserve an endangered language?' (See the video below, for a glimpse into the world of the Maya)
Where?
The talk, which will take place outdoors at Tresseck Campsite, Hoarwithy on Sunday 10th July, will be followed by a short Q&A session, after which, you will have the option of joining Charlotte on a “pre-expedition” hike. Whilst navigating the popular Hoarwithy Circular Walk, you will likely encounter obstacles rarely to be found in the Jungle, such as Gates, Stiles, Tracks, Fences, Nettles. Remain undaunted and we will soon return to the local pub for a drink to cool down.
Hike
Should you choose to join the post-talk hike, please remember to bring sensible outer wear and walking shoes, water, snacks, sun hat and sun cream. It is expected to last 1.5-2hrs.
Whats next?
This is a fundraising talk for a Humanitarian and Wildlife Conservation Expedition to the Amazon later this year. More information will be available at the talk.
Who is Charlotte?
Charlotte is an Anthropologist, Filmmaker, Educator and Author from South Wales. She was awarded the Scientific Exploration Society’s “Rivers Foundation Award” in 2019 for work in protecting and preserving two endangered indigenous Maya languages. Her work took her to the depths of the Central America jungle, where she lived and worked with the Maya to preserve their heritage. She has since edited and published two books in Q’eqchi’ and Mopan Maya, in a bid to preserve the language before globalisation causes its extinction. She is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Royal Anthropological Institute and Member of the Explorers Club. In addition, as a result of her work, she has recently been awarded the “Cadogan Award for Resilience” by the British Dyslexia Association.
