Two-day symposium with activist, academic, and community researchers to connect struggles for survival at the energy extractivist frontier

With the expansion of energy technologies that produce intermittent energy flows from solar and wind sources, as well as the growth of the electric vehicle market, the demand for battery materials has been increasing exponentially. This has led to a proliferation of lithium mining projects, threatening to consume vast swaths of land and resources. These territories are, for the most part, situated in global peripheries on all continents.

Voices of the territories beyond the Green Curtain: Connecting Struggles for Survival at the Energy Frontier is a two-day symposium that will bring together people researching and resisting the threats of this expansion on their territories.

The event is co-organised by

• LIQUIT, Voices of the territories, a research consortium composed of London South Bank University, the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the State University of Montes Claros (Unimontes) and the Federal University of the Valleys of Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys (UFVJM)
• The Scales of Justice Project, a research project based at the Royal College of Arts and
• The Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex.

This two-day symposium will gather community, academic and activist researchers working in territories of Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Portugal, UK, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and others. It will include an exhibition, roundtables, panels, workshops and hands-on activities to build tools of future collaboration.

The aims of the event are to:

1. Report on territorial violence justified by the energy transition, focusing on the expansion of the lithium extractive frontiers
2. Amplify the voices of those threatened by and resisting these processes
3. Articulate and join voices from different territories to strengthen their capacity to contribute to climate justice

There will be interpretation available (Portuguese - English) on both days.

Preparatory Webinar - September 16th

Where is the 'lithium valley'?

September 16th, 9 to 11 am (PST) | 1 to 3 pm Brasília | 5 to 7 pm London

In preparation for the Symposium, this webinar will discuss the narrative strategies that promote the establishment of so-called Lithium Valleys around the world and their implications. We will hear from Alejandro Artiga-Purcell (San José State University, USA), Mikhail Aruberito (Shine Collab, Zimbabwe) and Aline Weber Sulzbacher (Federal University of the Valleys and the Semiarid Region- UFVJM, Brazil), with moderation by Fabiana Leme (LIQUIT). Symposium, Day 1- September 25th

10 am to 7 pm, hybrid event (in-person at LSBU - Borough Road Building - and online through Zoom and YouTube)

Day one will be more expositional and open to hybrid participation, focusing on discussions about the situation in territories affected by the arrival of lithium mining operations.

Symposium, Day 2- September 26th

10 am to 5:30 pm, in person at LSBU (Borough Road Building)

Day two will be held in person and will consist of workshops and mapping exercises with the aim of building tools for future collaboration and dissemination.

Vozes dos Territórios para além da Cortina Verde

Simpósio de dois dias com ativistas, acadêmicos e pesquisadores comunitários para conectar as lutas pela sobrevivência na fronteira extrativista de energia

Com a expansão das tecnologias energéticas que produzem fluxos intermitentes de energia a partir de fontes solares e eólicas, bem como o crescimento do mercado de veículos elétricos, a demanda por materiais para baterias tem aumentado exponencialmente. Isso levou à proliferação de projetos de mineração de lítio, ameaçando consumir vastas áreas de terra e recursos. Esses territórios estão, em sua maioria, situados nas periferias globais de todos os continentes.

Vozes dos territórios além da Cortina Verde: Conectando as lutas pela sobrevivência na fronteira energética é um simpósio de dois dias que reunirá pessoas que pesquisam e resistem às ameaças dessa expansão em seus territórios.

O evento é coorganizado por

• LIQUIT, Vozes dos Territórios, um consórcio de pesquisa composto pela London South Bank University (Reino Unido), pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), pela Universidade Estadual de Montes Claros (Unimontes) e pela Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri (UFVJM)
• O projeto de pesquisa Scales of Justice, sediado no Royal College of Arts (Reino Unido) e o Institute of Development Studies da Universidade de Sussex (Reino Unido).
