Event description

Description

We would like to invite you to be part of a focus group with City of York Council (CYC) to discuss tobacco control in York.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in York (and worldwide) and although York has a low prevalence of smoking, at 9% compared to 14.9% for England and 17% for Yorkshire and Humber, this still equates to approximately 15,000 smokers, 220 deaths and 1505 hospital admissions in every 100,000 people.

There is currently no central point of collaboration on controlling and preventing the use of tobacco in the city for example, through the use of trading standards measures, improving education, support cessation in healthcare settings, implementing smokefree zones and workplace initiatives.

Public Health is establishing a new bi-monthly tobacco control alliance for York, attended by a range of officer stakeholders from CYC, NHS and other sectors. CYC would like to engage with the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector in terms of preventing people (particulalry children) taking-up smoking, and in improving the number of people who attempt and succesfully quit each year in York.
