Event description

Description

This is the second in a new series of themed policy forum events for the voluntary and community sector, co-ordinated by NCVS. The first event considered the issue of food poverty. This is a separate, yet linked event, which builds on opinion and evidence relating to poverty and financial resilience, broadening the discussion to the lived experience of ordinary working families.

All are welcome to help inform ways to develop a stronger voice for the sector in influencing local and national policy-making. We aim to identify local priorities and agree collaborative action to improve our work and the lives of local communities. There will be space for open discussion and networking, and you are encouraged to share your experiences and challenges.

What is meant by 'Ordinary working families'?

We will be joined by Dr Paula Black, Director of Nottingham Civic Exchange (NCE). Housed at Nottingham Trent University in the heart of the city, Nottingham Civic Exchange is a resource to connect people and to look at social and economic issues in new and challenging ways. See more here.

NCE undertook initial research on families that are just above the level of the most deprived, but still living in financial precariousness (sometimes called 'just about managing'). The 'Out of the Ordinary' report published by NCE in June 2017 focused on available data across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, and was intended to set the scene. The issue now is how to engage ordinary working families as collaborators in research and social change. Much work on this group of people is about them rather than with them and these voices are missing from the policy debate.

Bring your lived experience, and knowledge of working with and supporting local people. Help to identify ways of engaging those most in need.

Regional Campaigns Staff for the Cabinet Office will also be present at this Policy Forum to listen to experiences, with the aim that Government Offices are better able to communicate at a local level.

Please register your attendance now. A full agenda, and areas of potential discussion, will be emailed to you in advance of the meeting.
