About this event

Run the River - Volunteers

Run the River wouldn’t be possible without a team of brilliant and enthusiastic volunteers. If you want to be involved join our team of Volunteers and help make Run the River even better in 2022.

This year is out 10th anniversary of Run The River and this is the first time the event has taken place in person in three years.

Volunteer roles range from giving our runners water along the route, to being at the finish area putting medals round our triumphant runners’ necks. Please see below for details.

All Volunteers will receive a full briefing, a t-shirt and something to eat, plus a huge thank you from us and the sense of satisfaction that being involved in an event like this brings.

If you'd like to run in the event, please visit the event page here

Route Marshals

You’ll be stationed along the route as a visual guide to help direct runners to make sure they go the right way. It’s an incredibly important role and ensures our runners stay safe and know where to go. It’s also a great opportunity for you to cheer and spur the runners on, so be as loud as possible; sing, dance, shout – whatever it takes to give every runner your full support! We have whistles, flags, foam hands and thunder sticks to aid you in your merry making. Please note you must be over 18 to be a Route Marshal.

Start & Finish Line Marshals

At the start of the race, you’ll help ensure runners are in the right place and raring to go. You’ll be prepped to answer any last minute questions and will help marshal them towards the start line. Once the race has started you can help our pupil band, support on the baggage drop, or present runners with their finishers medals as they triumphantly come over the line.

Baggage Drop Volunteers

The baggage drop is a key part of our Runners’ Village, and is packed full of action and energy. As part of the baggage drop team, your role will be to greet runners, take their bag(s) and ensure they attach the corresponding numbered tag to their arm as you do to their bag. Bags are placed in numerical order to allow runners to smoothly pick up their bag upon Running the River. This is a high energy role that requires good communications skills and teamwork.

T-shirts & Goody Bags Volunteers

As a t-shirt and goody bag volunteer you’ll greet all the Run the River runners to the Race Village, as their first port of call will be to come to the t-shirt tent to collect their t-shirt for the run. You will then help guide the runners to the warm-up area, so get involved too if you’re feeling active. After the race has started you then head towards the finish line and help set up so you’re ready to hand out goody bags to all runners once they have crossed the finish line.

Water Station Volunteers

To hydrate our brilliant runners, we’ll have a water station half way round the route. We need you to help to set up the station before the run starts and then cheer all the runners on as they come past whilst reloading the tables with more bottles as thirsty runners take them. We have whistles, flags, foam hands and thunder sticks to aid you in your merry making.

Whilst we will endeavour to allocate you to your role of choice we can not guarantee this.
