Intro

Come and have a fun day with Protect Earth!

Protect Earth is a registered charity, helping farmers and landowners increase tree cover and biodiversity on their land. We plant trees on unused and degraded farmland, use trees to provide shade and shelter for crops and livestock, create wildflower meadows, and help with tree maintenance for saplings that are struggling.

What is happening?

Protect Earth bought part of Goytre Hill, Lloyney, (near Knighton, Powys) three years ago, and with funding from the Welsh Government we have been able to plant a new woodland near the top of the hill which is unsuitable for other purposes. Lower down curlews have been spotted in the grasslands, a welcome return.

After planting new saplings, they need regular care in the first few years. We are looking for volunteers to help us give them the TLC they need. This involves identifying struggling trees and pulling grass away from their roots, or they might need their stakes and guards straightened so that saplings can grow strong and tall. Some stakes and guards may have broken, and they will need replacing to stop the young saplings from being eaten by rabbits.

We appreciate volunteers who are able to come for the whole day, or just for a few hours and children are welcome. Please be aware that the site is accessed up a fairly steep path which can be slippery when wet, so might not be suitable for younger children.

We love it when the local community gets involved in their area, and we also welcome guests from further away. It allows us to make new friends, catch up with friends we've made, and learn what people love about their communities while talking to them about enriching local biodiversity.

Full details will be sent out a week before the event, including the What3words and Google maps links for the meeting place.

What do I need to bring/ know?

No previous experience is necessary, we’ll train you up and provide all the necessary equipment. Please come dressed for the weather and wear sturdy boots or wellies.

We will provide tea, coffee, and biscuits to keep you going, but please bring your own lunch and snacks if you plan to stay all day, and a refillable water bottle, as there will be water available to top up.

There is parking nearby at the foot of the hill.

Whenever possible we encourage volunteers to car share, use public transportation, or even cycle, to keep emissions down and avoid stressing parking space.

What happens if we need to cancel?

Bad weather is difficult to plan for. In general, we will continue if it’s raining, but if a severe storm is forecast or the ground is frozen or overly muddy, we will have to postpone an event. We will try and notify you as soon as we possibly can, and you’ll be invited to the rescheduled event.
