Event Details

This talk forms part of a series taking place in the centenary year of the Representation of the People Act 1918 which gave some women the vote for the first time.

Before the First World War ended in 1918 only 60% of male householders could vote. The Representation of the People Act 1918 changed this, enabling 5.6 million men to vote for the first time.

Join us for this discussion about the campaign for universal male suffrage from the Chartists to after the First World War.

The panel includes:

Lord Wallace of Saltaire who will chair the debate. He is a Liberal Democrat Life Peer and previously a Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics.

Dr Matt Cole, Teaching Fellow at the University of Birmingham, whose work looks at twentieth century constitutional and party politics.

Dr Nick Mansfield who is a Senior Research Fellow in History at the University of Central Lancashire and a former Director of the People's History Museum, Manchester.

Emma Griffin who is a historian of modern Britain at the University of East Anglia and is the Literary Director of the Royal Historical Society.
