Event description

Description

Join us for a day-long celebration of the centenary of women’s suffrage, with films, live music, discussions, poetry, and food
Plus: Free workshops for crafty children

We found that there were just too many amazing women in the North of England to contain in just one event. So, we at Cinema for all have put together both an afternoon and an evening event to mark 100 years of women at the ballot box. You’re welcome to come along to either, or both, and to stick around in-between for coffee and crafting.

Afternoon event: 14:00 – 17:00

“What are your demands?”

This is the question being posed to our panellists on 24 November as we all settle down to a tea party, suffragette-style: which is to say, in front of a panel of fascinating women.

Namely: Dani Abulhawa (Sheffield Hallam University), Gail Gibbons (Sheffield Futures), Annalisa Toccara (Our Mel), Clare Midgley (Sheffield Hallam Uni), and chair Auriel Majumdar (Perform Green, Sheffield Creative Guild)

And it’s also the question we’ll be asking YOU, as we open up the discussion, eat some cake (provided by the lovely Homemade) and get this world put to rights.

The discussion will be kick-started by a screening of a new short film, commissioned from the Yorkshire, North east and North West Film Archives, made up of archive material of women in British public life over the past 100 years.

Children’s workshop
During the discussion, we will be teaming up with Girl Gang Sheffield to host a crafty workshop inspired by the Suffragettes.

Evening event: 19:00 – 00:00

In the evening, you’ll have a chance again to watch our Vote 100: Born a Rebel film, as well as a selection of other short films made by brilliant women.

Plus, a free snack box from Fancy an Indian will keep you going through our line-up of fantastic lay-deez:

- Kate Dossett, professor at the University of Leeds, will speak about her fascinating Feminist Archives project: https://bit.ly/2P5RX3z

- Tchiyiwe Chihana, a local poet, will drve us all to the brink of jealousy with her gift for words

- Neighbourhood Voices, an all-female local choir, will prove once and for all that covers can be better than the originals

- All Girl Arson club will treat us to their unique brand of raucous girl pop

- Venus, drag performer extraordinaire, will get the last few of you out of your seats

We will end the evening in the trustworthy hands of Girl Gang as they treat us to one of their world-famous (well, UK-famous maybe) DJ sets.
