Description

Vowels: typical and atypical development in children, assessment and intervention.

“Now we must pull ourselves together, for we have come to the vowels, and they are very troublesome” (Rippman, 1911:32).

Difficulties with the production of vowels can cause issues with both intelligibility and acceptability. On this study day we aim to give an overview of typical vowel development in children and explore the assessment of atypical vowel realisations. We will consider intervention, with a focus on practical treatment approaches aimed at increasing the skills and confidence of clinicians working in this sometimes problematic area.

Anne Harding-Bell, PhD, FRCSLT, is a specialist SLT closely affiliated to both the University of Sheffield and to Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Anne developed the first UK post-graduate course in cleft palate speech in Cambridge, and in recent years, led the programme in Sheffield. Her primary interests include assessment and intervention of cleft palate speech, particularly infant intervention, and the impact of conductive hearing loss on speech development.

Jane Speake, PhD, MRCST, is a specialist speech and language therapist. She was the manager of the children’s speech and language therapy service for Cambridgeshire, retiring in 2015. Her primary interests include assessment and intervention with children who have persisting speech difficulties; vowel disorders; issues with intelligibility; and optimising service delivery.

We hope that many of you can join us for this study day. Tickets cost £15.
