Event description

Description

A day conference for children’s and youth work in the Diocese, looking at how we create a culture of intergenerational church on the voyage of life together.

Speakers & workshops include:

Culture, Confidence & Creativity: working with schools to create pathways that stimulate inter-generational activities in your church. David Morton will help us explore how developing a culture of volunteering in local schools can create pathways to support the development of intergenerational activities in your Church. He will achieve this by focussing on three key words: Culture, Confidence and Creativity.

Starting and developing fresh expressions of church that grow disciples of all ages: led by The Revd Tim Lomax, we will explore together how fresh expressions of church help us to reach out to new people and enable them to grow in faith.

Creating Community: we talk a lot about the “fringe” – those people connected with the church more loosely than the core. How can your church create inter-generational community with those on the fringe? What opportunities are there for building relationships between people of different ages? Looking at baptism practice, toddler groups, and more, Margaret Pritchard Houston will help you think about how to take the principles of inter-generational church to mission and outreach, creating relationships and making new disciples.

Faithful at Home? Research consistently shows that parents have the greatest influence on their children when it comes to matters of faith – but they often feel they lack the confident and skills to be faithful at home. This workshop will explore some practical ways to help families live and share their faith together when not at church.

3 generations of youth leaders in one church! Joelle Sweatman along with her mum and grandmother share their experiences of running youth work in a rural, village church. In 2012 they set up IMPACT, a youth group for 8-14-year olds in St Mary’s Church, Pirton. They will be sharing the impact and importance of working as an intergenerational team and how they involved other members of the congregation and the wider community. They also took their young people for two weekends away and will be sharing the importance of residential trips and how they organised these.

Transforming Lives How does a Christian community engage beyond the walls of the church inter-generationally? If we worship inter-generationally, how does that belief transform the ways we act with the wider community? Revd Robb Sutherland is vicar of a church on a social housing estate in the north of England which has developed a culture of inter-generational worship that has affected how the church engages with the local community to see lives transformed as the Christian Community grows.

#DefiantKindness
Talking through difficult events affecting young people in our multicultural, multifaith world – using the Jerusalem school, Hand in Hand, Yad be Yad, as inspiration. Bonnie Evans-Hills will talk through with participants a process for helping young people and children to share their concerns about violence, terror, death, and difficult world and community events.
