About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Interpreting idioms, metaphors, and cultural references is a familiar challenge for Deaf interpreters and Deaf Translators—particularly when working from scripts, texts, or input from a hearing interpreter, and producing live or recorded BSL translations. These expressions often carry layered meanings that may not land clearly with clients who come from different linguistic, cultural, or generational backgrounds.

This 3-hour session explores the role of figurative and culturally-bound language in interpreted/translated interactions. We’ll look at examples drawn from real-world settings across the UK, and consider how expressions like “throw in the towel,” “he’s a Del Boy,” or “blue Monday” might land with clients who have different frames of reference—whether due to faith, heritage language (e.g. other signed/spoken language), or limited exposure to British culture.

Through practical examples, discussion, and group activities, participants will explore:

  • What idioms, metaphors, and cultural references are, and how they function
  • Why these expressions present challenges for transaltion into BSL
  • How to recognise, unpack, and convey meaning clearly and appropriately
  • How to adapt strategies depending on the client’s background and the context
  • When it’s appropriate to paraphrase, explain, omit—or ask for clarification

Activities will give attendees the opportunity to collaborate, reflect, and experiment with how idiomatic language can be adapted or reworked in BSL.

Who is this session for?

This course is designed for qualified and trainee BSL/English Translators and Intralingual Interpeters working in any domain.
