Event Details

During this immersive course you will develop your understanding of the basic principles of counselling, as well as coming to understanding of the differences between these 3 major core approaches. This will allow you to explore which approach suits your personality best, so that if you decide to commit to more formal training you will arrive at this decision better equipped. There is a strong focus on personal development, self-care and reflection during these workshops – you will be encouraged throughout to become more self-aware. You may be thinking about changing career path, enhancing your existing skill base to offer more within your current discipline, or even simply interested in developing a more empathetic approach in your personal interactions – whatever your motivation this short course support you to take the first steps in this journey.

The short course is split into two weekends. In the first weekend we will be exploring and developing the skills and personal attributes required of a counsellor. This is both participatory and experiential, including group discussions, small group work and role-play exercises. In the second weekend, we will return with renewed focus on the individual approach that is best suited to you. This includes developing your skill base within the frames of the CBT, Psychodynamic and Person Centred approaches, and identifying which approach suits your existing skills and talents. The course culminates in a unique chance to take part in 20 minute 1:1 session with the course leader, in which you can discuss your future options in this field.

You can take the first weekend as a stand alone course, or both weekends. Please note that in order to take part in the second weekend you must have participated in the first.

Why study this course?

• Develop a range of basic counselling skills such as active listening, reflecting back, nonverbal communication and dealing with silence
• Learn about the three major approaches in counselling - Cognitive Behavioural, Psychodynamic and Person Centred Therapy and the practicalities of implementing them
• Have a 1:1 regarding your future options in the counselling field
• Increase your self-awareness – whether in a personal or professional context
