Event Details

For some writers, despite Johnson’s cynical words, writing can be a joy and an inspiration, worth doing for its own sake. However for the movie writer, the only way to see your vision realised is to write scripts that sell.

To write a successful screenplay takes time and careful focus.  It means rewriting, rewriting again, challenging your assumptions, pausing, then rewriting once again. It also means learning how to focus your storytelling in a way that is cinematic and also pragmatically aware of the needs of the marketplace. On this development programme, we will ask you to interrogate your own ideas, study and analyse your target audience, and hone your concept so that the controlling idea or ideas are clear and vivid and compelling.

If your project is an ‘art-house’ movie, you will  need to know who your potential buyers are, and you will need to achieve a style that meets the demands of this market sector.  And if you are writing a commercial high concept movie that is clearly aimed at a wide audience, you still need to be able to write characters that compel, with tense scenes that offer space and subtext for your actors.

And whichever kind of movie you write, you will always to need to sell your vision.

We are looking for experienced writers - novelists, TV writers, radio or theatre writers - who are keen to acquire the additional skills they need to write movies.

We are also looking for emerging writers of outsanding ability who are flexible enough, and smart enough, to learn how to become a professional movie writer.

All participants need to have completed a first draft feature film screenplay to be eligible to join this programme.

In order to be eligible for this course you will need to have completed a first draft feature film screenplay.

In addition, you will have closely studied the work of several current screenwriters and their films which can serve as ‘references’ for your own project – either because the project is in a similar story area or genre, or because the writer has a comparable tone and style.

This is a six to eight month development process, during which you will transform the first draft of your feature film script into an intensively revised second draft which you will pitch to industry professionals. You will develop creative tools for delving deeper into your characters and their world and the story’s genre. You will refine or (possibly) throw away and rebuild your structure, and you will explore strategies to focus on your key premise and controlling idea. At every stage you will receive challenging feedback from industry professionals and other writers on the course.  Finally, you will hone your pitching skills, specifically in relation to your project.

The course culminates in a 3 day ‘hothouse’, which will include a masterclass with a guest screenwriter, producers and other industry professionals; and a day in which you pitch your project to currently active producers, directors and commissioners.

NB. Please note this is WAITING LIST - please sign up and we'll send you dates as soon as they have been finalised.
