Event description

Description

Join us for a thought-provoking, open-ended discussion amongst local companies and stakeholders to share views and ideas on international trade and the impending EU exit.

On the day you’ll hear a keynote from Matt Lumb, former CEO and DIrector of global brand Tangle Teezer; the world’s first and best-selling detangling hairbrush with more than 50 million brushes now sold around the world.

During Matt’s seven years at the helm at Tangle Teezer he transformed the brand from being a “Dragon’s Den reject” to one of the fastest growing companies in the UK and a household name. Matt talks openly about the challenges he and his team faced whilst trying to manage exponential growth overseas growth, UK manufacturing capacity, the importance of IP as well as copycat and counterfeit issues and the grey market. The Tangle Teezer story is a fascinating one as in six short years Matt helped sales grow from £1M to almost £30M per annum whilst retaining industry leading profit margins. Export sales soared from 2% to 82% in more than 70 countries during that period.

Allie Renison, the Institute of Directors’ Head of EU and Trade Policy, will lead a roundtable discussion about continuing to trade overseas through the EU exit. Allie represents the voice of business on EU policy matters both to Westminster and Whitehall and with European institutions, providing the link between business and Government on international trade.

Our Head of Policy, Matt Griffith, will also be there on the day to lead a discussion and answer any questions you may have about exporting during the UK's exit from the EU.

This breakfast event is designed to tackle the following topics in dynamic rountable discussions led by our experts:

  • Expanding your trade horizons: Looking to new markets - Kerry Stagg, Research Advisory Manager, Business West

The South West of England Export Landscape

In today’s uncertain political climate, support for companies to understand the complexities of international trade and help to overcome export barriers is ever more necessary.

5 years ago South West export performance was lagging far behind other UK regions, the story is very different today.

The South West’s annual growth of 7% has been consistent for the last 2 years, with our dependence on the EU for export reducing from 65.7% in 2013 to 45.6% in 2018.

Strong growth is coming from China, South East Asia and Latin America, and for the first time 50% of our top ten export markets are no longer EU or US markets where economic growth has slowed. 70% of economic growth is forecast to come from emerging markets by 2030, and 90% global growth coming from outside the EU.
