Event description

Description

This Primary School is on the western outskirts of Cardiff. There are 270 pupils on roll, including 80 pupils who attend the nursery on a part-time basis.

Around 49% of pupils are eligible for free school meals. This is significantly above the national average.

There are several elements to the project which can be completed separately if teams do not have sufficient manpower to complete all aspects in their allotted time.

On a Wednesday afternoon the school runs an afterschool club called Families Growing Together. Parents attend the school where they work with the children on an allotment/edible garden. Employee volunteer support would greatly help develop the area which is still in its early stages.

The aim of the club is for parents and children to learn about sustainability and providing for their families.

Tasks which volunteers can chose from include:

  • Building Raised beds

  • creating a Sniff, Smell and Taste planting area and a wildflower area

  • Volunteers with basic carpentry skills may also wish to build a shelter and some long wooden benches which will be used for seating and potting

  • In the main playing yard the school would like a small wooden shed/playhouse which can be painted and used as a healthy tuck shop for the children.

  • Further tasks include painting some new playground games, maintaining an existing raised bed.

  • Artistic volunteers could also work with the children to make some murals on wooden boards which could then be fixed to the school building.

Additional Information

Volunteers would not have to tackle all of the tasks, they could simply opt to tackle those which they feel able to complete in 1 day. The school will be able to purchase some of the materials but does have a limited budget and would appreciate any contribution made by volunteers
