2018 Wales Schools Debating Championships and Training Days

Who can enter?

Team

- Each secondary school/college can enter one team of 2 students

- The competition is open to all students in Wales aged 14-18

- Cost to enter is £30/£40 per team (CEWC member/non-member)

Individual

- Each secondary school/college can enter one student

- The competition is open to all students in Wales aged 11-14 to enter as speakers or Key Stage 3 Questioners

- Cost to enter is £15/£20 per speaker (CEWC member/non-member, Questioners are free)

- Cost to enter both competitions is £40/£50

 

How is the Debating Championship organised?

There are 8 Regional Rounds held from 16 October to 15 November 2018.

Each round will contain a maximum of 10 teams and 8 Individuals; with one winning team and one winning Individual selected from each round.

The 8 remaining teams and individuals will then take part in our Quarter-Finals Round held at Coleg Powys, Newton in February 2019; with 4 teams and individuals progressing through to our Semi-Finals and National Final held at The Temple of Peace, Cardiff in March 2019.

Regional Round Dates

Tuesday 16 October - Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun, Aberdare

Tuesday 23 October - Howell's School, Cardiff

Wednesday 7 November – Penglais School, Aberystwyth

Thursday 8 November - Ysgol Tryfan, Bangor

Friday 9 November – Myddelton College, Denbigh

Tuesday 13 November – Olchfa School, Swansea

Thursday 15 November – Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, Ammanford

All rounds will start between 12.00-1.00pm.

 

Which Regional Round should our School attend?

Schools can sign up for any Regional Round, but each round is limited to 10 teams. If your first choice is full, please choose another location from the remaining options.

 

First time debating?

Fear not! We hold Debate Training Days prior to the Competition to help students understand what is required. Schools can sign up as many students as they wish for the Training Days and then make a decision on which two students to put forward for the Competition.

North Wales Training Day: Tuesday 18th September 2018 @ Coleg Menai, Bangor

South Wales Training Day: Thursday 20th September 2018 @ Cardiff University

Cost: Debate Training is £10 per student (CEWC member) / £20 per student (non-member).

Time: 9.00am - 3.30pm (Refreshments included)

- Mae’r gystadleuaeth ar agor i’r holl fyfyrwyr yng Nghymru o 11-14 oed i gofrestru fel siaradwyr neu Gwestiynwyr Cyfnod Allweddol 3 

 

- Y gost i gofrestru yw £15/£20 fesul siaradwr (aelod/heb fod yn aelod o CEWC, Cwestiynwyr am ddim)

 

- Y gost i gofrestru ar gyfer y ddwy gystadleuaeth yw £40/£50



Sut mae’r twrnamaint yn cael ei drefnu?

 

Cynhelir 8 Rownd Ranbarthol rhwng 16 Hydref a 15 Tachwedd 2018.

Bydd bob rownd yn cynnwys uchafswm o 10 dîm ac 8 Unigolyn; gydag un tîm buddugol ac un unigolyn buddugol yn cael ei ddethol o bob rownd.

Bydd yr 8 tîm ac unigolion sy’n weddill yna yn cymryd rhan yn ein Rownd Gogynderfynol a chynhelir yng Ngholeg Powys, Casnewydd ym mis Chwefror 2019; gyda 4 tîm ac unigolion yn symud i’n rowndiau Cyn-Derfynol a’r rownd Derfynol Genedlaethol a chynhelir yn y Deml Heddwch, Caerdydd ym mis Mawrth 2019.

Gall ysgolion gofrestru ar gyfer unrhyw un o’r Rowndiau Rhanbarthol, ond ni chaiff mwy na 10 tîm gymryd rhan ym mhob rownd. Os yw eich dewis cyntaf yn llawn, dewiswch leoliad arall o’r dewisiadau sydd ar ôl.

Peidiwch â phoeni! Byddwn yn cynnal Diwrnodau Hyfforddiant Dadlau cyn y gystadleuaeth i helpu myfyrwyr i ddeall y gofynion. Gall ysgolion gofrestru hynny o fyfyrwyr ag y dymunant ar gyfer y Diwrnodau Hyfforddiant, ac yna penderfynu pa ddau fyfyriwr i’w dewis ar gyfer y Gystadleuaeth.
