About this event
This workshop, which is aimed primarily at counsellors and psychotherapists and others who are interested in working one-to-one outdoors, will explore the practicalities of moving your practice outside.
As the field of ecotherapy grows and diversifies, many people who have previously trained in traditional room-based working are considering taking their practice outdoors. For some this comes from a long held love of nature, whilst for others the move was initially inspired by the need to find safe spaces to work during the pandemic. Many are influenced by the growth of environmental awareness and a sense of the importance of direct connection to the ecosystem in the process of healing. Whatever brings you to this interest, in this session we will explore some of the practicalities as well as the issues that arise in making this move.
The session will cover:
- Why work outside? new possibilities; finding partnership with nature
- First contact: who is suitable for outdoor work; initial meetings and assessments; contracting
- Choice of Place: suitability of different locations, risk assessment, issues to consider
- Different boundaries: implications of change; counselling room to outdoors; collaborative working style
- Structure and spontaneity: organising sessions or going with the flow. An outdoor toolbox
- Working with unpredictability: finding flexibility; potential pitfalls, surprises and opportunities

Although this event is part of the Ten Directions training course for ecotherapy practitioners, anybody can book and take part in this public online event! If you are interested, please do buy a ticket.
Please note that at Tariki Trust, we generally do not record our online events. Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds to people who do not show up assuming that they will get a recording.
