About this event

Walk by Train - South Western Railways

Moreton Train Station to Maumbury Rings

In conjunction with South Western Railways, join us for a longer walk from Moreton Railway Station back to Dorchester South Station. Situated on the River Frome, just eight miles east of Dorchester, the village is achingly picturesque and cluttered by little more that a church, a pub and a tiny railway station. From Moreton, you will walk in a westerly direction back to Dorchester visiting Lewell Mill (Hardy's Tess location). Then up through Puddletown Forest to Hardy's Cottage, on to Kingston Maurward and along the river path to Stinsford with an opportunity to visit the grave where Hardy's heart is buried. Finally you will walk across the water meadows and through Fordington to the Maumbury Rings, a Neolithic henge located in the south of Dorchester and close to Dorchester South Station.

The walk will be led by an experienced local guide who will share interesting facts and stories along the way.

This is one of our longer walks for seasoned ramblers. It will be necessary to bring with you a day rucksac with waterproofs, sufficient water and a picnic lunch. This is a free event, however you will be required to pay your train ticket - £5.30 (adult). If you are travelling from Dorchester by train, please board the 9:33 South Western Railways service from Dorchester South Train Station. Your leader will be waiting for you at Moreton Train Station. The walk will start at 9:45. On the other hand, you may wish to drive out to Moreton and then take the train back to Moreton at the end of the day.
