Walk: Islington and the Spanish Civil War
Sat 3 June 2017, 11:00 – 12:30 BST
This walk is inspired by Islington Museum and the Marx Memorial Library’s Banner’s in Spain exhibition. It further explores the borough’s involvement in the Spanish Civil War from those who went to Spain, to those people at home who actively supported the Spanish Government and People.
Islington International Brigaders included everyone from academics to plumbers; Aid Spain supporters at home were communists, priests and everything between! We will explore some of the fascinating stories of the people connected to Islington as well as the events which took place across the borough to raise awareness and money for food, clothes, medical aid and even arms. Memorial services were held for those who died and returners came to tell their stories. At the same time Islington was addressing the issues of Fascism in local politics and preparation for war at home and appeasement abroad.
The walk starts at the Marx Memorial Library on Clerkenwell Green and finishes at Islington Museum at the Banners for Spain exhibition. At the Marx Memorial Library we will have the opportunity to go in and view the memorials to those who lost their lives in the Spanish Civil War as well as the banners of the International Brigade in Spain. Duration 60 – 90 minutes.
The walk is led by a Clerkenwell & Islington Guide.
