Walk of the Women – suffrage stories in Hereford
Event Information
About this Event
This is an opportunity to undertake a circular walk through Hereford and find out about the women (and men) who were involved in the suffrage movement in the city. Their stories are now rediscovered and brought to life through seeing their homes, places of work and where they campaigned.
Walk Leader Clare Wichbold MBE has recently completed her Herefordshire Suffrage Stories book and this will be available and hot off the press for your opportunity to purchase a signed copy.
Herefordshire Suffrage Stories - Synopsis: Seen as a backwater in the early 20th century, Herefordshire has some remarkable suffrage stories. Through the 2018 Violet Plaques campaign, the new narrative began to develop. Drawing on individuals, both men and women, and those who made the city their home, I have found courage and cowardice, acts of bravery and foolhardiness, and joy and sadness. These tales need to be told to a wider local history and women’s history audience.
Kindly organised by Clare Wichbold MBE on behalf of Herefordshire Walking Festival.
