Step into the footsteps of one of the world’s most renowned explorers Captain James Cook starting right here in North Yorkshire.

Join us for a circular 5km ‘Walk and Talk’ up to Captain Cook’s Monument and explore the famous circumnavigator Captain James Cook’s monument and the rugged North York Moors. The monument was built in 1827 by Whitby banker Robert Campion, who laid the foundation stone on Captain Cook’s birthday 12th July 1827. Captain Cook was born in Marton, Middlesbrough and lived his boyhood in Great Ayton.

Fletchers Farm is a family run farm which has been in the Fletcher family for 5 generations, and for much of that time they had specialised in dairy. On the farm they now have a Farm shop, Coffee shop, Camping area, livestock and a play park for kids. They also hold functions and various events throughout the year.

11.00am - Meet at Gribdale Car Park (free parking)

11.10am - Check everyone has arrived and start the walk.

Setting out from the Gribdale Gate car park, we will head south and climb gently uphill through the tree cover and across the moor to Captain Cook’s Monument. We’ll have a brief stop to catch the beautiful views of North Yorkshire before turning to the east to continue along the forested trail. From here, the route will turn to the north and traverse the undulating landscape, taking you through descents that will showcase the rugged nature of the moor. The route takes you past an Alpaca farm before turning west walking through some farms and finally back at the car park. The route is approximately 5km and takes 1h - 1h20min to walk. Suitable shoes is recommended due to the uneven terrain.

12.15 - 12.30pm - Arrive back at Gribdale Gate Car Park

12.30pm (optional) - drive a short 10min drive to Fletchers Farm Coffee House to continue conversations over a cuppa or lunch.
